When I became a young mum I suddenly became acutely aware of my lack of knowledge when it came to how to parent.  I was living in a community at the time and surrounded by other Christian families so I was able to observe how other parents raised their children.  As much as I was grateful for their example it also caused me to become confused.  I quickly saw that no two couples raised their kids in the same way and this left me asking which way was the right way.

One day I read 1 Corinthians 1:11-12…

11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.”

Although these verses are about division over church leaders I felt like God used this passage to show me that my confusion was coming from a place of not knowing who to follow.  I decided that although there were good role models around and I could learn from different people my ultimate example would be Jesus.  Once  I set my mind on following His leading then my confusion quickly disappeared.

In the years since, setting my mind to follow Jesus has been incredibly helpful and not just with parenting children!  There are so many opinions and views in every aspect of life that unless you’re committed to following Jesus’ example and learning from Him you will become confused and even double-minded.

The wonderful thing too is that Jesus wants us to go to Him if we’re lacking in wisdom and He’s faithful to give generously (James 1:5).  When we do this, God in turn, will use us to be godly examples to others.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
